Situated just NW of Johannesburg is one of the most unique nature reserves in all of South Africa. Not only will you see Rhino, Cape Buffalo and numerous species of antelope including Springbok, Roan and Sable you will also be able to see Lion, Cheetah, African Wild Dog, Crocodile, Hippo’s and a vulture hide is provided for viewing and photographing the Cape Vulture. There are separate large areas where during your game drive you can drive through the Lion area, Cheetah area and Wild Dog area. These areas are not cages but areas of a few acres where these animals run freely. The vulture area has been another success story for this Nature Reserve with a special feeding platform – The Vulture Restaurant – which is extremely popular with the birds and the visitors alike. Local farmers and butchers donate carcasses on which the birds, sometimes up to 200 at a time, gorge themselves. This Reserve will satisfy even the most avid game viewer. My personal favorite area is the nursery area. This area contains the young cubs of many of the predators of the reserve. Here, for an additional fee, you will be able to pet and photograph Lion cubs, White Lion cubs, Tiger cubs, Cheetah cubs and other animals that are contained in this area. Just a visit to this small section of the reserve will make the whole trip worthwhile. The Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve also contains a reptile display area, the Crocodile Pub where, drink in hand, you can watch crocodiles at close quarters, a protected braai (barbeque) area, thatched lappa with a restaurant and a curio shop. The cost for this day trip is our Observer w/day trip daily rate plus the cost of admission, @ R70. There are additional charges for some of the areas in this reserve. Because of the distance from our camp (@ 3 hours) we must limit this day trip to groups of 4 or more. Special arrangements for smaller groups may be possible through Pieter, however expect an additional surcharge if arranged. This trip can be combined with the Lesedi cultural experience.
