Custom Knives
Handmade in South Africa

Custom knives are increasingly popular among collectors and investors.  Knives have been used for centuries as both tools and weapons and handmade knives are considered an art.  The art of a knife is created by its craftsmanship, functionality and utility.  Handmade knives are not mass produced and require much effort and skill to make each and everyone of them.  The owner of a handmade knife has in their possession a unique and personal item.  The craftsman who make these special items take great pride in their work, sculpting it, carefully heat treating and finishing them until it becomes an object of exceptional quality.  These are true heirlooms that will out last there owner and will be passed down to their sons and grandsons after them.

Cruiser Safaris is proud to introduce to you H.J. Herselman.  H.J. is the father of one of our former PH's, Jacques.  After working for the police force for a few years he spent the next 20 years in the arms industry from which he retired in 2000.  During all of this time he made knives as a hobby for himself.  Upon retiring he settled on a farm in the Steenbokpan area and turned his knife making hobby into a fulltime job.  All of his knives are of his own design and even though some are made from the same template, no two knives will be the same.  In making his knives he starts out with a bar stock of the best available knife steel on which he marks out the profile that he will make.  The profile is then cut using a band saw.  Next the profile and hollow grind is roughed out and the pinning and relief holes are drilled.  The knife is now heat treated, finely ground then the bolster and handle are fitted and polished into the final product.  A scabbard is then hand stitched for he knife and the knife is then ready for it's new owner.
